Watsonville & Antioch Weekend

JULY 19, 2010 –--We raced both Friday and Saturday and with mixed results. Friday night we ran the Taco Bravo 360 Series at Watsonville’s beautiful Ocean Speedway.

Saturday we raced the Golden State Challenge King of California 410 Series at Antioch Raceway……these two tracks could not be more different. One is a manicured showplace with a cool Pacific Ocean breeze and the other is a hot, dustbowl that is totally lacking in track prep. I think you know which is which.

Watsonville had 36 cars and is the norm almost all the competition is quality….a very competitive series. Evan qualified sixth, did well in his heat race and started sixth in the feature. Because of the rules the thirteenth quick car started on the pole but that is just the way it is I guess.

Twenty-four laps into the Main Evan spun trying to pass for fourth. Justin Sanders then made contact with Evan knocking Justin out of the race….we apologize for that.

Evan was able to restart and finished in the back minus a left rear shock.

Saturday morning we pulled the 360 Maxim from the trailer and stuffed-in the 410 A.R.T. car and headed off for Antioch.

Antioch had twenty cars and Evan was quick time. He finished third in his heat and fifth in the Dash.

The track was super dry and I think the place used to be a gravel pit in a previous life. Grip is nonexistent along with the water truck.

Ev started the feature fifth and ran well. The set-up, one of Richard Brown’s innovative concoctions got better as the race progressed and Evan was closing on Brent Kaeding for second place on lap twenty-eight. While trying to get under Brent on turn four Ev got into the dust (super kryptonite dust….the whole place is serious dust) got very loose and half spun, this allowed his two immediate pursuers to pass and Evan finished-up fifth.

No heartache here, he tried and only missed it by an inch of making it work.

George and Rick Santos, our friends and engine builders were on hand and they helped the motor stay happy in the hot weather. These old-time drag racing stars have been a major help to us.

It has to be said, what Antioch lacks in facilities it easily makes up in fan enthusiasm….they are as good as anyplace we race. Big thanks to all that dropped by the trailer afterwards and purchase a t-shirt.

Next week we are on to Marysville Raceway, probably the last dirt track in California we have not yet raced. I think this is round twenty-one and only two more left in the season for Golden State.

Please drop by the trailer and say hello….we hope to make some new friends.

Have a safe week.
