APRIL
26, 2010 –-- Saturday night was the fifth stop of the year for the Golden State Challenge - King of California traveling series.
Luckily for us this round was held at Watsonville’s Ocean Speedway, easily the closest track to home. Watsonville can be chilly and a bit breezy but this week Mother Nature cooperated making it a beautiful day and helping to fill the grandstands.
The track had held a practice night the day before and needless to say the track was dry and without much grip. There were 23 cars and Evan was the fast qualifier. He started sixth in his heat race and finished fifth which transferred him to the Main without having to run the B Main.
The fast qualifier gets to draw the pill for the Main Event inversion and we drew the eight pill, the highest number in the bag! This meant Evan would start the Main in the forth row on the outside.
The car did not handle the rough track very well in the Feature and we had some heating problems with our (back-up) engine and Evan slipped to the ninth spot where he finished the night.
This week we have another double header race weekend as the Taco Bravo 360 series moves to Santa Maria Speedway for round two and then we race the same track the next night for round six of the Golden State Challenge.
So, this week the 360 will have to go back into the KPC chassis for Friday night’s event then Saturday morning we will put the 410 motor back in the car for that evening’s race. We have been offered the use of old friend and fellow racer; Greg Porte’s SLO based shop so the Saturday morning wash and engine swap will be a bit easier. Greg, thanks in advance for the hospitality.
Santa Maria is a great track with incredible fans and has California’s best promoter in Chris Kerns. You could not go wrong by attending these two nights of racing. The facility is top-notch and Kerns takes great care of both the fans and the racers.
Hope to see you there and as always, thank you for checking in..
