Watsonville / Antioch Weekend

APRIL 5, 2010 –-- This past weekend was to have been a double header. The Taco Bravo 360’s at Watsonville on Friday and on Saturday, the GSC King of California 410’s at Antioch. Well, as Meatloaf sang, “One Out of Two Ain’t Bad” cus Watsonville was rained out but Mother Nature did smile on Antioch.

With a steady drizzle the outlook for Watsonville did not look good but we made the half-hour tow just in case they were able to get the race in. The track was too far gone by 5 PM and the pits were starting to get slimy so, without ever taking the track the race was cancelled and we came home.

After a quick wash of a muddy truck and trailer we loaded the 410 car for the next days 410 event at Antioch.

We were without the services of longtime mechanic Brian Poe so it was only going to be Evan, Richard Brown, Ev’s dad, John and Amanda, Evan’s girlfriend. Evan’s mom, Linda was home ill so it was a skeleton crew.

There were 22 cars entered and Evan ended up timing-in fifth which would put him in the Dash if he transferred from his heat by finishing fifth or better. Luckily two cars did not finish our heat race as Evan flipped on the white flag lap and happened to thus finish 5th!

It was a rush to replace both wings and repair other assorted damage in order to get on the track in time for the dash but we (barely) made it. Big thanks for the various mechanics who gave us much needed help.

Finishing fourth in the Dash gave Evan a starting spot of fourth in the Main.

Jonathon Allard, the points leader and guy to beat was starting on the pole, beside him was Kyle Larson, second-row in was Bobby McMahon and Evan was to his outside. When the green flag dropped Jonathon and Larson pulled away, Evan got by McMahon and it looked like it was going to be a pretty good race between the front row starters with Evan trying to not let them get away. A spinning lapped car collected Larson then it was up to Evan to try and compete with the very quick Allard. Turn four was very slick and Jonathon, the highly skilled veteran was able to open an ever increasing gap between he and Evan. Brent Kaeding made a charge on about lap twenty but was unable to pass and finished third behind Evan.

The second place finish tied Evan’s best previous finish achieved last year at Santa Maria Speedway and there were plenty of smiles in our pit.

This weekend we at back to the famed Tulare Thunderbowl, a very fast and racy place. We opened the year there against the Outlaws and felt we did pretty well so we are looking forward to the return visit.

Thank you for reading our weekly report and as always, look forward to seeing you at the races!

Suggs Family Racing hopes you had a great Easter weekend.
