World of Outlaws Tulare Opener

MARCH 13, 2010 –-- Last weekend we completed our first two days of racing this year, the two day Outlaw show at Tulare.

This has been a hectic week for Evan with school and time for the weekly car maintenance has been extremely hard to find. As I type this Evan is putting the finishing touches on the car so we can load it in the morning for the four hour tow to Chico for the two day Mini Gold Cup.

The WoO race was fun. It is always a thrill to race with the best and see where you wind-up at the end of the night.

Friday Evan qualified 14th out of 32 cars. Time trials were close and just a hundredth or two separated half of the field.

In our heat race Evan was running third and the front caliper froze up, locking the left front wheel and causing Evan to spin. A sixth place finish sent him to the B which he won while running faster lap times than the Dash cars….we knew the car was fast.

Starting 14th in the A feature was not ideal but we were well in the field and we felt we had a competitive car. Evan had not raced since October and to this point in the evening had only enough laps to shake off the rust.

About 15 laps into the feature Evan had worked his way up to 8th and at that point the right rear shock broke-off and exited the car! Unable to keep up Evan finished the race with a respectable 13th.

The next morning we washed and serviced the car hung-out a bit with our engine builder friends George and Rick Santos of S&S Automotive. Good friends and great guys.

Crew chief Richard Brown and his son Trevor were able to join us for day two and we were grateful to have Richard available to us for round two with the Outlaws.

Saturday night started out similar to Friday as Evan qualified in the middle of the field but this night just missing the invert. He was running well in his heat before being struck in the left rear by a competitor breaking the birdcage resulting in a DNF in the heat and sending us to the B main for the second night in a row.

Evan again won the B main and giving him a starting spot of 15th in the A feature and 35 laps later finished the race in 14th position. The car was fast, we felt competitive and had a great time racing with the best!

This week’s race, the annual Mini Gold Cup at Chico’s Silver Dollar Speedway is not an Outlaw race this year but promises to have fifty cars. This is not a point race for the Golden State Challenge Series but it is a race with great tradition and always draws a crowd both in the stands and the pits. We hope to see you there!

Please drop by the trailer and say hello…we’ve missed everyone over the long winter off-season.

Thanks for checking in.
