JULY
20, 2009 –- This week we were back to the two-race weekend routine. Friday night we ran another of the GLR 360 winged races at Watsonville’s Ocean Speedway.
This was the second of the Johnny Key qualifying races and a combined race with the Handy Racing Promotions Civil War Series. We went into the night tied for the lead in series points but by evenings end we slipped back a few spots.
Evan qualified ninth out of 39 cars and finished fourth in his heat and after the pill draw started second row inside. That is where the good news ended! Early in to the race Evan was pushed up in to the loose dirt and spun. Fortunately no one ran in to him but we were out of contention and finished 15th. Disappointing for sure.
Our night began by qualifying first, Evan’s 4th GSC quick-time of the year. He started 4th in his heat and finished third. Ev was fortunate to draw the number one pill for the dash and was able to hold-off Tyler Walker for the dash win.
Starting on the pole of the feature has not happened for us this year and it was a thrill to have a real opportunity to pick up our first GSC win. On the start Walker got Evan in the first turn and as it turned out, thirty laps later, that was the one-two finish with Evan finishing second to Tyler.
We had a great time and picked up a few series points while maintaining our position of forth place in GSC points.
This weekend we are back to a two race schedule. Friday night Evan races at Watsonville’s Ocean Speedway in the GLR 360 series then Saturday we make the easy 90 minute commute to Antioch Raceway for another round of the Golden State Challenge Series.
Evan feels the 2nd place finish at Santa Maria gives him a little momentum for the GSC. That inertia along with a couple of recent chassis changes give us encouragement that we will get the Kistler-KPC in the winners circle soon.
Suggs Family Racing thanks you for dropping by our site and hope to see you at the track.
