GSC Santa Maria Recap

JULY 15, 2009 –- This week the Golden State Challenge was back to Santa Maria Speedway for the first time in several years. It is a wonderful and fabled quarter mile track dug into a hillside just off of Hwy 101.

Chris Kearns is the new promoter/operator and as stated many times recently by competitors of all classes, is doing an outstanding job. The stands were packed with fans eager to watch the long absent 410 wing cars and based on what we heard after the races they were not disappointed.

Our night began by qualifying first, Evan’s 4th GSC quick-time of the year. He started 4th in his heat and finished third. Ev was fortunate to draw the number one pill for the dash and was able to hold-off Tyler Walker for the dash win.

Starting on the pole of the feature has not happened for us this year and it was a thrill to have a real opportunity to pick up our first GSC win. On the start Walker got Evan in the first turn and as it turned out, thirty laps later, that was the one-two finish with Evan finishing second to Tyler.

We had a great time and picked up a few series points while maintaining our position of forth place in GSC points.

This weekend we are back to a two race schedule. Friday night Evan races at Watsonville’s Ocean Speedway in the GLR 360 series then Saturday we make the easy 90 minute commute to Antioch Raceway for another round of the Golden State Challenge Series.

Evan feels the 2nd place finish at Santa Maria gives him a little momentum for the GSC. That inertia along with a couple of recent chassis changes give us encouragement that we will get the Kistler-KPC in the winners circle soon.

Suggs Family Racing thanks you for dropping by our site and hope to see you at the track.
