Ocean Recap & Quincy Rainout

JUNE 7, 2009 –--This was to be another two race weekend but surprisingly Mother Nature stepped in and washed out Saturday’s Golden State Challenge Series 410 race scheduled for Quincy.

It is too bad because the rural burg with the large paperclip track has just about the most enthusiastic fans around. It is always good to see them. We only go there once a season so hopefully next year will be a different story.

Friday night was another of the GLR 360 races at Watsonville’s awesome Ocean Speedway. That place under the management of John Prentice just gets better and better and if it were not for the economy

I believe this series would have 35 cars routinely, as it is the turnout is typically in the mid twenties. With Ronnie Day, Brent and Bud Kaeding, Jason Statler, Brad Furr and a mix of solid journeymen and excellent kids it really is a competitive series.

This week Evan qualified third which was excellent since he was the 15th car out. This gave Evan a starting spot of 4th in his heat which he quickly turned into a heat race win.

The 10 pill was drawn for the main which meant Evan was starting in the 8th position. On lap ten he was passing for 4th when contact was made with another car which resulted in Evan making an easy flip never the less damaging the top wing.

With no time for repairs he lined up in the back of the field and when the race was over, some 20 laps later he was able to pass enough cars to finish 12th. Not a good points night but with the heat win Evan was able to hang on to a 50% share of first place.

We won’t be back to Ocean till the 26th which begins the qualifying races for September’s 50 lap Johnny Key Memorial, a storied and very special local event.

Next week we get on the road to Medford’s Southern Oregon Speedway for round 12 of the GSC series. Two days later on Monday we make our first appearance at Central Oregon’s Cottage Grove Raceway for round 13 of the 410 series. We are looking forward to getting on the road for a while!

Thanks for coming to the races and please continue to support dirt tracks……..
