MAY
31, 2009 –--This weekend, the last one of May had us racing a Golden State Challenge twin bill. GSC race number eleven was Friday at Watsonville’s Ocean Speedway and Saturday had us making the four hour drive to Placerville for race number twelve in the 410 series.
Friday night we were the first car to go out and qualify and twenty cars later Evan was third quick and maintained his record of timing well. We were hopeful that this momentum would carry over thru the night but somewhere along the way we lost the set-up and Evan had to deal with a sub-par car throughout the main event. Finishing seventh was not what we were shooting for but with a couple of lesions learned we hoped to improve the next night at Placerville.
Again Evan had an early qualifying draw and went out second and although the track was not perfect neither were we! Winding up fourteenth quick out of 21 cars presented a problem as we missed the invert and the dash and faced a poor starting position in the main on a track that that surely was not going to have much passing.
Evan spoke to Jonathon Allard and Ashley Smith of the famed Williams “Zero” car and received some much needed set-up advice. Finishing tenth was again not the desired outcome but Evan really liked the way the car handled so we left Placerville with some valuable information…..thanks guys.
Twelve races into the 2009 GSC season we are sitting 5th in points behind Jon Allard, Tyler Walker, Brent Kaeding and Kyle Larson. The second half season continues next Saturday in the remote California town of Quincy. It’s a long tow to the northeastern tip of the state but this is our single annual trip to this paperclip track with the enthusiastic crowd. The car count may be challenged because of the cost of the tow but it’s another opportunity to race so we will be there and we will cross our fingers for a good turnout.
But not so fast! We have a GLR 360 race at Watsonville the day before on Friday. Evan is first place in points, just a couple ahead of Brent Kaeding and we hope to perform well enough to maintain the lead. If you have not attended a 360 race at Watsonville you should make your way to this beautiful facility. The car counts are great and the well-prepped quarter mile is a lot of fun.
Thanks for dropping by the site and we hope to see you at the track!
