11, 2009 –-- After a rained-out schedule last weekend we were back to the two-race weekend routine; Friday night at Watsonville’s Ocean Speedway then on Saturday up to Chico for the fabled Bradway Memorial.
The race at Ocean was the latest round of the GLR Investments 360 series. This is the third year of the winged 360’s and even in this economy the car counts are growing.
Evan qualified a solid seventh out of 25 cars, this was good considering he was the 23rd car out. He won his heat race and started the feature on the pole. The race had five aborted starts before a complete lap was run under green. Once staying green Evan was in command making the mid and top lines work to perfection. After another mid-race red Evan lost the lead on the restart after hitting a rut and surrendered first place to the up and coming Justin Sanders. Justin went on to record his first-ever sprint car victory and Evan came in second.
Ocean is only about a half hour from our house so we were able to get home by midnight and get some sleep for the following race day. With the great help of our friend and longtime crew man, Brian Poe we were able to get the 360 car washed and put away and load the 410 in the trailer for the four and a half hour tow to Chico’s Silver Dollar Speedway.
The Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial, an annual winged 410 affair held to honor one of the sports 90’s era super-stars is a points race for the Golden State Challenge King of California Series. It draws not only the GSC regulars but dozens of others attracted by the big payout and special prizes made available to the racers. Diane and Dave Durica, longtime sponsors and sprint car supporters hustle all year for donations, prizes and funds to support the generous lap money. They are great fans and remain very devoted to keeping the memory of Dave Bradway alive.
Even qualified 11th of 36 and after a bobble in his heat race had to run the B Main where he finished second and got his qualifying time back. Quickly after the green flag fell on the A Main Evan’s car did not respond well to the heavy track surface and was unable to gain much ground from his 11th starting spot. Finishing ninth and evading and dodging numerous wrecks during the forty laps was an achievement but not exactly the results Evan was looking for.
Suggs Racing wishes to congratulate Jonathon Allard the Bradway winner who snatched victory from Brad Sweet on the last turn of the final lap! Another hair-raising last second victory for Allard, the reigning King of California.
Next week ee are back to Ocean on Friday and then down to the Tulare Thunderbowl Saturday for another round of the
GSC.
We have our race T-shirts! Please drop by the trailer and say hello and perhaps purchase a shirt……..hope to see you at the races.
SPECIAL APPRECIATION: We wish thank Kenzo Okubo and Randy Shiosaki for helping us obtain product help from Autolite and Fram. The spark plugs and oil filters are greatly appreciated.
